Our heritage and mission
The Ritz has stood at the heart of Rushden since the 1930s, creating countless memories across generations. Today, as a Community Interest Company, we are dedicated to protecting this historic Grade II listed building and reviving it as an inclusive, affordable cultural space for all.

A proud heritage since 1936
Built behind the historic Palace Cinema by the pioneering Hewitt family, The Ritz officially opened its doors on 21 November 1936. Designed by renowned architect Paul J. Panton of Talbot, Brown & Fisher in Wellingborough, the building quickly became Rushden's entertainment capital. Beyond moving pictures, our grand stage welcomed local operatic societies, dramatic troupes, John White’s Band, colourful pantomimes, and celebrated 1960s pop groups.

Weathering the storms and social change
Over the decades, The Ritz proved its resilience. When demolition threatened the landmark in 1973, community passion prevailed and the proposals were officially overturned. Regular cinema screenings drew to a close in September 1982, transitioning into a vibrant bingo and social hub that hosted holiday films and community clubs, eventually operating as Flutters Bingo until its closure in December 2022. Every chapter of this building echoes the shared stories of Rushden residents.

A modern community hub on a budget
Our mission is simple: to create a warm, safe, and accessible haven where everyone can enjoy life without breaking the bank. Following agreed lease terms with the landlord, our vision unites a friendly café, community bar, affordable cinema, live theatre, social bingo, and bookable multi-purpose rooms. We are curating permanent historical displays to honour your local memories, but we need your backing to complete the transformation.
"The Ritz has always been part of Rushden's soul. Reopening it as an affordable community space means our town's rich history will continue to inspire generations to come."
